Champagne's glitterati - Krug '02, Salon '02, Ulysses Collin, Cedric Bouchard
Wonderful, mature Champagne is one of life’s greatest pleasures. Rich, ripe, complex flavours, often with a savoury dimension, are cut through and given life and lift by the presence of fine bubbles; the march of time slowed by the presence of high acidity and a good amount of time spent sur lie. The way such wines spread across the palate yet seldom seem heavy brings to mind noble German Rieslings and top white Burgundy from another era. It is something of a cliché to say so, but great old Champagne really is an occasion in and of itself…

Today’s offer includes a number just such mature treats, a carefully chosen selection of some of Champagne’s most sought after ‘growers’ and a bevy of top flight bottlings from the great 2002 vintage. The ‘02s have always been hot property. Now that they are starting to display the flamboyance that age, acidity and ripeness can bring, they are becoming scarce.

On the grower front we’re delighted to be able to offer a small parcel of Ulysse Collin’s Blanc de Noir ‘Maillons’ based on the 2011 vintage and disgorged in 2015. Olivier Collin is one of Champagne’s brightest stars and his wines, produced from a selection of single vineyard plots are exceptionally vinous, pure and characterful. Aube star Cedric Bouchard is represented with multiple cuvees from vintages 2011 to 2013; there’s DP back to 1985; Taittinger Comtes Rose 1997 and Bollinger’s ungrafted franc de pied Vielles Vignes Francaises 2004. This is a list truly fizzing with goodies.
