Definitely not second best…
17 October 2020

Blind tasting can make a fool of anyone… and one wine that has duped its fair share of good palates over the years is the unassuming second wine of Rauzan Segla, simply named “Segla”. It is often tasted alongside its second growth compatriot and other notable names from the Margaux appellation, and it regularly outshines the supposedly more distinguished competition.

2015 was the year the very talented Mr Audebert first made his mark at Canon and Rauzan Segla. It was a dream start; both wines were lauded with praise by critics and merchants. We’ve had to wait a few years for the second wines to be released, but it’s been worth the wait. Coming from a year in which the appellation of Margaux shone particularly brightly, this incarnation of the Segla is simply superb. It packs a wonderful punch of violet scented cassis; pure, fragrant and sleek, this glides over the palate with the authority and refinement of a Cru Classe from the upper echelons of the hierarchy, staining the tastebuds with juicy dark berry fruit and starry minerality. At this early stage, it’s easy to see why this can trump its more reserved and introverted partner – this is designed to offer lavish early drinking pleasure, and that it does in spades. Anyone with a penchant for exuberant yet refined claret should stock up on this beauty!
