Delicious Crozes-Hermitage
10 October 2017

This week sees a cohort of Justerini & Brooks staff heading to the Rhone for some swift reconnaissance tasting before vintage 2016 releases in November. To get in the spirit of things, we are delighted to offer one of our great value picks from the northern Rhone, perfect at this time of year. Etienne Pochon’s Chateau Curson 2013 is a terrific example of how good Crozes-Hermitage can be. Vinified plot by plot from hillside vineyards, as opposed to the lacklustre wines of the plains, the ‘13 imbued with plenty of zippy, natural acidity and fine, crisp flavours.

2013 was a late harvest, not picked until October. This long, cool growing season has proffered spicy red fruit, blackberries, black pepper and graphite notes, in very juicy Syrah. Vivid and more “digest” than in warmer years, yet not without liberal fruit and a certain texture; the result of both barrel and bottle age. Curson is the top wine of the estate, habitually needing three to five years to unwind. Today it is drinking perfectly and would partner excellently with game, roasted meats and autumnal vegetables. Those looking for delicious, affordable drinking to suit the season need look no further.
