Dominus Estate 2016s
31 October 2019

Dominus has become one of the most iconic cult Californians. This decade alone has seen four wines achieve the highest accolade from the Wine Advocate, and of the latest release, the 2016, Lisa Perrotti-Brown admitted that “if I could give more than 100 for this one, I would”. This is testament to this remarkable vineyard and affirmation of Christian’s conviction to dry-farming, restraint during fermentations and his meticulous approach to selection and viticulture.

It is perhaps no surprise that the four perfect scores have all resulted in the introduction of the third label, “Othello”. The Moueix family, ever the perfectionists, first blended Othello during the 2006 harvest, however we would have to wait until the 2012 vintage to see its debut. Greater selection has added another layer of polish to the beautifully constructed fruit. Initially a touch reserved, the Dominus begins to reveal notes of bright blackberry, cocoa nibs, gravel and fresh bay leaves. The core of graphite infused cassis and black cherry, sweet spice, nori and scorched earth coat the palate with a real sense of authority – it is powerful, but in no way overbearing; there’s a classicism to the frame, yet it is enveloped with silky, luxuriant tannins and an ornate, multifaceted finish of minerals, sweet berries and spices.
