Encapsulating the spirit of Churchill
11 April 2020

There’s aren’t too many 2009 Champagnes that can challenge their 2008 siblings, but Pol Roger’s Winston Churchill 2009 does just that. This is a superb vintage for Churchill, so much more generous and charming on release than the 2008 iteration. As usual the blend is dominated by Pinot Noir, the grape that fared best in 2009, and the result is an impeccably balanced bottle of Champagne that glows with the sun’s golden rays yet firms up on the long finish, suggesting more to come for those with the patience to wait. Priced at a 20% discount to the 2008 vintage, this feels like a firm buy for anyone who admires Pol’s flagship cuvee. “Aromatically open with orange peel, peach and conference pear, then almond, lemon and a fine floral note that soon becomes something more bakery-scented; a dash of yeast and crisp buttery croissant pastry. Generous, pliant and wonderfully expressive as it fans across the palate, a touch of noble bitterness, the pith of citrus, then drops of lemon and fine lemon tart, orange zest and tiny red berry notes. There is more Pinot Noir than usual in this 2009 and the decision tastes like a very astute one. Inviting and open- knit initially, before the ratchet tightens on the long finish, suggesting more layers to come from this luminous charmer.” - Julian Campbell, Champagne Buyer, Justerini & Brooks    Read More
