Felton Road - 2017 one of their best ever vintages
“We love it when it’s tricky,” was owner Nigel Greening’s opening line introducing the 2017 vintage. Words of confidence that underline the know-how, experience and clarity of vision at Felton Road. The aim here is to allow place and vintage do the talking, not the wine-making. Tasting the range from any one vintage is as interesting a journey through terroir as it would be in Burgundy. The wines are uniformly delicate, bright and silky but each have their own distinct personality. 2017 was a cool, wet year; a small harvest thanks to losses at flowering and a severer than usual crop-thinning to ensure optimum grape ripeness. A third less wine was made than normal, a not insignificant decrease - a million dollars’ worth of fruit was dropped to achieve this level of quality but in the end was well worth it, for at this stage they think 2017 is one of the best vintages they have made. Pinots average a standard 13.5% alcohol, colours are light and bright, textures are smooth and the wines exhibit great elegance and intensity. If you value texture, nuance and refinement in your Pinot Noirs, then look no further.
