Ferren Wines – “flirting with perfection”
30 May 2020

Great Californian Chardonnay is a world unto itself and in Matt Courtney and Ferren Wines we are delighted to have unearthed a truly up-and-coming star of the scene. Matt spent eight years as right-hand man to the legendary Helen Turley at Marcassin, before striking out and setting up Ferren with longtime friend David Wherritt in 2013. Those who know the Marcassin wines will know that their style is extrovert and expressive, tenets that Matt has carried over to his own wines, along with a modern sense of refinement, purity and tension; attributes that make his wines stand out as some of the greatest Chardonnay being produced in the state today. Make no mistake, these are bold wines – they are bathed in Californian sunshine, but that’s not to say they don’t have precision, freshness and layer after layer of flavour.

And don’t just take our word for it, Jeb Dunnuck has scored the Sonoma Coast Chardonnay a whopping 95 points and the Lancel Creek an eye-popping 99 points– a wine he describes as “flirting with perfection…like a Grand Cru Chablis on steroids…the Chardonnay of the vintage?”. These 2016s are drinking beautifully now, having already gained considerably in complexity since we first tasted them in early 2019. A 2016 enjoyed just last night was monumental; deep, profound yet also fresh – a true totem to the Californian Chardonnay gods.
