A Must-Buy - Fonbel 2009
Château de Fonbel, while not one of the great Saint Emilion terroirs, is still a wine of quite some pedigree. Since 1971 it has been owned by Alain Vauthier, who also owns the stunning Château Ausone and it is he who must take credit for producing what is, without a doubt, the best value wine from Saint Emilion.
Like most Saint Emilion properties Château de Fonbel’s vineyards are dominated by Merlot, which accounts for 70% of plantings with Cabernet Sauvignon (20%), Petit Verdot (7%) and Carmenere (3%) making up the rest. The wine blend doesn’t deviate too much from the plantings. Château de Fonbel's wines are plush and fruit driven with plenty of structure, which drink well on release. The 2009 is absolutely gorgeous, full of new leather and blackcurrant on the nose and a fleshy, juicy, cassis laden fruit palate with soft, velvety tannins on the finish. There’s nothing to stop you drinking this wine now and it will continue to drink well over the next 7-9 years if cellared carefully.
Château de Fonbel represents undoubtedly very good value in almost any vintage but in a great vintage like 2009, it’s a “must buy”.
