Fratelli Alessandria 2013
21 September 2017

Verduno, the northern-most outpost of Barolo, has long been the region’s best kept secret but word is starting to get out. Its top tier crus Massara and Monvigliero are capable of producing wines as good as any in the Langhe. The unique location with its proximity to the Tanaro river and the ensuing day/night temperature shifts edges the style of its wines towards floral, elegant and aromatic. Furthermore Verduno is home to some of the most respected and traditional wine-producers in the Langhe, historic and quality-focused estates who are well-placed to take advantage of the area’s natural riches. Two arch exponents are Castello di Verduno and, today’s offering Fratelli Alessandria.

This under the radar estate has been making some ravishing wines over the last few vintages, none more so than in 2013. Their Baroli can be considered among the true greats of the region. Vittore Alessandria considers “2013 a classic, vertical, balanced vintage, the harvest was quite late - mid October- so we have a classic vintage but not as late and extreme as 2004 which was the end of October.” We found the wines to be utterly spell-binding, ethereal but assured. Impeccably balanced, classical and charming in equal measure, they will satisfy Barolo die-hards and Nebbiolo virgins alike.
