Giacomo Conterno 2012s
06 September 2016

We think very highly of the Barolo 2012 vintage - wines that mix elegant, ethereal, floral qualities and classical structures without being as formidable as behemoth vintages such as 2006 or 2008. The Giacomo Conterno Baroli are textbook examples. Owner Roberto Conterno considers the 2012s to be “fruity and elegant with powerful tannins.” They are superbly balanced and ultra-refined, nothing less than you would expect from one of the legends of traditional Barolo wine-making. There will be no Monfortino release from the 2012 vintage, the cask was blended into the Cascina Francia cuvee – lending it more than a little extra class, complexity and length of flavour. A truly wonderful wine.

Roberto’s 2014 Barberas are well worthy of a mention, too. It is no secret 2014 was a difficult Italian vintage. However it is in years such as this that the great affirm their reputations. A quite brutal selection that resulted in nearly half a crop has borne two luscious Barberas of deliciously open, vivid and pure fruit. Conterno’s great reputation is well assured.
