The Tuscan Coast’s second oldest winery and one of its best kept secrets...
Grattamacco is one of those wonderful anomalies of the fine wine world. They fly under the radar of most, in the UK at least, playing second fiddle to the famous super Tuscans. Founded in 1977, they are the second oldest estate in Tuscany’s Bolgheri, after Tenuta San Guido of Sassicaia fame, and are turning out some rather wonderful wines of great character and drinkability to boot.
Their 14 hectares of organically farmed vineyard are situated on top of a hill, facing the sea, between Castagneto Carducci and Bolgheri - 100m above sea level. This unusually high altitude, for Bolgheri at least, and its inland location means that this part of the region is windier and less humid. Ordinarily Sangiovese cannot grow in Bolgheri due to it being very sensitive to humid conditions, however, in Grattamacco’s micro climate it thrives. This is therefore one of the rare wines from the Tuscan coast to have any Sangiovese in it, to the tune of 15%, adding verve to the 65% Cabernet Sauvignon and 20% Merlot. The wines are made with drinkability in mind rather than points or trophies. This gentle wine-making, a small percentage of new oak and a healthy dollop of sapid Sangiovese, make for refreshing Tuscan Coast wines of immense charm and allure.
