Grattamacco release the great 2015 vintage

In Bolgheri, the excellent 2015 season was a luckier one than many people might have given it credit. An unrelentingly hot start to the summer carried on throughout July but just as vine stress became a real threat, cooler conditions arrived and were followed by rain in the middle of August. This pushed back harvest date and allowed ripening to complete fully, yielding an immaculately healthy and ripe crop. In the end it was still “very easy to make powerful wines in 2015,” in the words of Grattamacco and Poggio di Sotto’s head winemaker, Luca Marrone, one of the brightest young talents in Tuscany. However the key to making great wine on the Tuscan coast, as opposed to merely very good, was tempering and harnessing this power. Picking at the right time, shortening maceration and adjusting oak ageing were the vital steps taken. Luca has succeeded in making a Grattamacco of real gravitas that combines richness of fruit, flavour complexity and energy. A profound wine of substance that will need time to unfurl and reveal its full splendour.

Grattamacco was the second winery to be founded in Bolgheri in 1977 after Tenuta San Guido of Sassicaia fame. The 14 hectares of organically farmed vineyard are situated on top of a hill, facing the sea, between Castagneto Carducci and Bolgheri - 100m above sea level. This unusually high altitude, for Bolgheri at least, and its inland location means that this part of the region is windier and less humid. Ordinarily Sangiovese cannot grow in Bolgheri due to it being very sensitive to humid conditions, however, in Grattamacco’s micro climate it thrives. This is therefore one of the rare wines from the Tuscan coast to have any Sangiovese in it, to the tune of 15%, adding verve to the 65% Cabernet Sauvignon and 20% Merlot.
