We are always searching for mature clarets that offer outstanding value for money. It’s a tough job, but we keep tasting, looking for that elusive bottle. We had one of these eureka moments when we opened a bottle of Haut Bergey 1998 a couple of weeks ago.
In March 1991 the charming Sylviane Garcin-Cathiard acquired Chateau Haut-Bergey. It is somewhat less well known than her estates in Pomerol and St Emilion, but it is no less dear to her heart. An ambitious renovation project ensued, the focus clearly on improving quality at every stage of production.
The 28.5 hectares of vineyards are situated in the heart of Leognan on Gravel over siliceous clay, chalk and iron subsoils, deposited here by the meanderings of the Garonne many millennia ago. It is these stones (and some would say the suburban concrete sprawl) that aides ripening in the Graves.
This 1998 is brimming with Cabernet fruit, hints of iodine, tea leaves and tobacco. Although the tannins are beautifully rounded and there are secondary and tertiary notes, there is still real verve and energy to the fruit. We were mighty impressed, and we think you will be too.
