Hermanos Pecina 2010
18 January 2019

Today’s offer brings the spectacular Riojan landscape to your door. For in the foothills of the dramatic Sierra Cantabrian mountains lies Bodegas Hermanos Peciña: proud owners of the excellent, single-vineyard Finca Iscorta. A true “Gran” Reserva in every sense, the 2010’s silky, dark bittersweet fruit is framed by tender, supporting tannins and seam of acidity, which speaks to the high altitude and calcareous soils that sustain the Rioja Alta subzone. Given an hour’s decant, it arrives in the glass with no hard edges, just layers of hearty, velvety fruit and waves of persistence.

Extended ageing is a firm feature of the Peciña style, and maturation is carried out in used, American oak barrels for far longer than regulations require. In the case of the Finca Iscorta Gran Reserva this means four years in wood (the regulations stipulate a minimum of two years for a Gran Reserva) with regular rackings from barrel to barrel carried out entirely by hand, before a further three years in bottle prior to release. It’s not purely about ageing though. At Hermanos Peciña meticulous effort goes in to producing a quality base wine, removing the need to rely purely on wood to iron out the wrinkles. Pedro Peciña and his team have lent new credence to the term “modern traditionalist” – the best of precise, contemporary viticulture and vinifications married to a staunchly traditionalist ageing regime. It is this combination, they claim, which creates wines that can mature in an upright fashion, satisfying as they do the desire for power, complexity and enjoyment, in equal measure, with a clear Riojan “into the woods” quality of brushwood, stones and spice. Finca Iscorta is the estate’s top single vineyard, situated at 500m altitude and the product of low-yielding bush-vine Tempranillo with an average age of 50 years. Only the very best fruit makes it into this botting.
