Hottest red burgundy tip this summer
24 August 2020
Our hottest tip for a summer red burgundy that won’t break the bank is undoubtedly the Maranges, La Fussière, 1er Cru, 2016 from Domaine Bachelet-Monnot. A convivial, fragrant wine that offers up bounteous, bright, herb-infused red fruit. Highly rated and considered “Terrific Value” by the Wine Advocate’s William Kelley, this is an alluring yet quintessentially, vivid Burgundian bottle which, at £25 per bottle including delivery, is surely one of the great steals in the Côte d’Or.
In his Bachelet-Monnot write up, William Kelley remarks “While the obvious collectibles in the portfolio are the Bâtard, Folatières and Referts, readers shouldn't neglect the terrific quality for a modest tariff offered by the domaine's Maranges and Santenay bottlings. The hearty reds from these appellations often bolstered négociant blends from grander appellations in days gone by, and the Bachelet brothers' judicious winemaking brings out all their neglected potential.” Read More
Commenting specifically on the 2016 red Fussière, William goes on to note it “…is showing very well from bottle, bursting from the glass with a lavish bouquet of plums, sweet spices and dried flowers. On the palate, it's medium to full-bodied, ample and layered, with a generous, gourmand profile balanced by succulent acids. It concludes with a sapid, youthfully chewy finish. This is a superb red Maranges that represents terrific value.” 91 points. William Kelley, www.robertparker.com
