Hubert Lignier - a first glimpse of 2015

Hubert Lignier - a first glimpse of 2015
Its autumn and that means our annual two week pilgrimage to Burgundy. We feel rather excited about the prospect, having been to the Cote d’Or twice already during the summer to take an early glimpse of the 2015s. They look sensual, expressive, packed with silky ripe fruit and boast more freshness than we were anticipating. So we are thrilled to announce our first 2015 offering, a unique and rather special wine that had never been on our radar until earlier this year.

You may not have heard of Nuits St Georges Les Didiers 1er Cru. It’s a small vineyard of less than 3ha owned entirely by the Hospices de Nuits, being a monopole you rarely see it about. It’s a very fine Premier Cru directly next door to Les St Georges on the south side, the soils are of rocky deep clay limestone and are well-drained. The resulting wines offer sufficient depth and power to suggest great ageing capacity but are always distinctly gentler and silkier in their youth than those of its better-known neighbour. Laurent Lignier of Domaine Hubert Lignier makes Burgundies we adore, wines of purity and nuance, so we jumped at the chance to taste the barrel he bought from Les Hospices de Nuits. The Hospices have their own very rigorous vineyard and winemaking team, after fermentation they auction the wine off in new barrels. Upon purchase Laurent racks the wine into older wood to avoid the oak making its imprint too much, he then oversees elevage and bottling. We simply love his 2015 Les Didiers 1er Cru, it displays all of the vivacious character, charm and elegance that are the hallmarks of this wonderfully traditional Burgundian domaine.
