We are pleased to bring you the third in our Justerini & Brooks Masters' Series; a spotlight on affordable everyday drinking wines from the world's greatest winemakers. Following Raul Perez and Joh. Jos Prüm., we are delighted to offer some great value gems produced by one of the Rhône Valley's leading lights, Jean-Louis Chave.
He is not only one of the very greatest winemakers in the Rhône, he is also probably the most respected. His attention to detail and vineyard knowledge is legendary. Sadly, tiny production, soaring demand and equally lofty prices make his Domaine bottlings both incredibly scarce, and beyond the grasp of most ordinary drinkers. His selection wines, however, are some of the greatest value secrets in the vinous world. A mixture of de-classified domaine fruit or fruit owned by growers he works with and helps during the growing season, they are packed with character, quality winemaking and, ranging between £10-35 per bottle, are a fraction of the several hundred pounds the Domaine’s Hermitage bottlings go for on the open market.

Côtes du Rhône, Moncoeur 2018 – equivalent to £10.68 per bottle inc vat
A blend of Syrah, Grenache with some Mourvèdre and Cinsault, from differing southern Rhône villages, including Rasteau, Vinsobres, Visan and Cairanne. The Syrah comes mainly from the coolest part of the southern Rhône, Vinsobres, which gives backbone and nerve to the wine whilst nearby Visan lends a softness to the Syrah part of the blend. Rasteau and Cairanne provide the Mourvedre and Grenache, representing the sunnier more southern side of the blend. A Côtes du Rhône of warmth and charm that stylistically leans towards the north, notes of dark fruit, garrigues, pepper and salt mixed with background Grenachey notes of kirsch. Great character and density whilst showing good energy and life. The blend is aged in a mixture of large wooden vat and small fut, no new oak is used.
St Joseph Offerus, 2017 – equivalent to £18.68 per bottle inc vat
From prime parcels in the historic southern communes of Saint-Joseph - Mauves, St Jean de Muzols and Sarras. Characterful, beautifully-weighted St Joseph that offers a fine balance of husky, dark bramble and cassis fruit mixed with higher-pitched granitic inflections of salt, red cherry and sap, with herbs and pepper completing the picture. Well-proportioned and full of character and snap. Aged for a year in used oak barrel.
Hermitage Farconnet, 2014 – equivalent to £34.18 per bottle inc vat
Farconnet is a blend of purchased fruit from various plots on the hill including Diognieres, Greffieux and Peleat as well as some declassified domaine fruit. A Hermitage that may be on the earlier drinking side but does not lack for character. Built on freshness, this offers fresh dark berry, sap and cracked pepper character, a hint of warming liquorice spice and finishing on lifting notes of cherry and herb. De-stemmed and aged in used oak barriques for up to 18 months.
