La Rioja Alta Gran Reserva 904 09

La Rioja Alta Gran Reserva 904 09
Today marks the latest release from La Rioja Alta’s 904 range of Gran Reservas and we are delighted to report that the 2009 is one of the most enjoyable vintages we’ve tasted. Seamlessly constructed, with plenty of ‘trad’ Rioja Alta character, but also no shortage of fruit and very silky tannins – it’s a wine of great pleasure today, and capable of ageing for a further decade at least.

“Reflecting the excellence of the vintage, as well as its power, this is the latest in a superb run of 904 Gran Reservas. Combining Tempranillo with 10% Graciano for added backbone and grip, it’s a wine that is (as ever) supremely drinkable on release, but will reward further cellaring. Spicy, aromatic and enticing, with the vanilla sweetness of American oak, savoury tannins and a core of stylish, balsamic-edged fruit. Traditional Rioja with a modern accent.” 96 points, Tim Atkin

First created in 1904 as a celebration bottling, 904 undergoes four years ageing in well-seasoned American oak barrels, with racking carried out manually every six months. The style tends to retain more freshness than their 890 bottling and is generally approachable a little earlier.
