L’Eglise Clinet 2015

L’Eglise Clinet 2015
Every year we marvel at the wines of Denis Durantou. For 45 years, he has honed his skills in Pomerol and the surrounding appellations with his unique blend of dynamism, graft and virtuosity. He is a maverick who has become part of the establishment, who has used his prodigious gift to recreate L’Eglise Clinet as one of the great properties in Pomerol.

It is always a privilege for us to taste Denis wines, and it was a rare honour to share this opportunity with our clients last week. His 2015 L’Eglise Clinet is a masterpiece, true to the Durantou style of muscular, profound Pomerol married to the lavish style of the vintage. It wowed us and our guests, and it would seem that critics have also been persuaded!

Antonio Galloni has just released his 2015 Bordeaux in bottle scores awarding L’Eglise Clinet 2015 a stunning 99 points, the same score as Margaux and Cheval Blanc. He aptly describes it as a “total pleasure bomb… a fabulous wine from Denis Durantou. Don’t miss it”. It has also been rated a perfect 100/100 by Decanter’s Jane Anson and 97/100 by Neal Martin. The critics are clearly echoing our thoughts about this wine. If you want impressive yet utterly seductive Pomerol to enjoy over the next 40 plus years, then look no further.

“The 2015 L'Eglise-Clinet is one of the wines of the vintage. Even better from bottle than it was from barrel, the 2015 towers out of the glass with stunning power and richness. Super-ripe black cherry, plum, licorice, tobacco and menthol are some of the many notes pulse through this riveting Pomerol. There is plenty of structure, but the tannins are nearly buried by the sheer intensity of the fruit. Hints of lavender, smoke, spice, licorice reappear to round out the finish. L'Eglise-Clinet is 90% Merlot, 10% Cabernet Franc, aged in 70% new oak. More importantly, the 2015 is a total pleasure bomb. This a fabulous wine from Denis Durantou. Don't miss it. Drink 2025-2050. 99/100” - Antonio Galloni

“The things that differentiate the good from the truly great are layers and persistence. And here, Durantou manages not just layers, but new flavours that manage to flood in and fill any available gap. So we have cassis and bilberry, with damson, charcoal, liquorice and pure blackberry juice filling the crevices between. This is a vertical wine, and yet stretches out to the horizon. It's going to age and age, and then some more. What a perfectly taut and thrilling wine, one that stakes a claim for greatness in 2015. 100/100” – Jane Anson, Decanter Magazine

“The 2015 L'Eglise Clinet is a blend of 90% Merlot and 10% Cabernet Franc that was matured in 70% new oak. It has an engaging, exquisite bouquet with effervescent red cherries, crushed strawberry, cold stone and violet aromas that just leap from the glass. The definition here is astonishingly good. The palate is medium-bodied with a silky smooth, satin-like texture and superb depth with a fine line of acidity, quite saline in the mouth and such effortless balance that you can almost ignore the backbone and structure of this Pomerol. As usual, it is a wine that will benefit from long-term aging—a supreme success for both the vintage and winemaker Denis Durantou and Olivier Gautrat (Denis’s wing man who has been at the property since 2001). Chapeau! Anticipated maturity: 2025 - 2055. 97/100” – Neal Martin
