Domaine Boucabeille is the sort of genuine under-the-radar producer that everybody wants. Located 20km from Perpignan in the sun blanched slopes of the Roussillon, this estate is fortunate to own steep vineyards facing south east, benefitting too from essential cooling breezes off the Mediterranean. Run by Jean Boucabeille, the property in its modern guise was borne out of a “hair brained gamble to replant vines on the very hillside where for centuries the best wines in the region originated”. This his father did in the 1970s and it clearly paid off! We were delighted to start importing the wines in 2015.

More than that, we believe it to be one of the very top whites of the Roussillon, and it is called Les Orris Blanc. Habitually a blend of Grenache Blanc and Roussanne, its profile is sunny, richly fruited but savoury, with bags of rocky, salty minerality and pithy citrus fruit. Starting with the white, the 2015 Cotes du Roussillon les Orris Blanc is a terrific blend of 65% Grenache Blanc and 35% Roussanne that will see eight months in 25% new oak barrels. Its medium-gold color is followed by classy notes of spiced apples, citrus and brioche; on the palate, it’s medium-bodied, nicely balanced and concentrated, with lots of salty minerality emerging on the finish. I suspect it will put on a touch of weight once bottled and drink nicely for 4-5 years. This is a serious, food friendly white. Jeb Dunnuck, The Wine Advocate
