Mediterranean Magic
14 April 2021

Today’s offer is a rare beast. Mature, hugely complex, soulful wines with an inimitable sense of place and pedigree, Mas Martinet’s Sara Perez has opened the treasure chest and released to us a handful of very special library vintages the likes of which are rarely seen. As those who follow these wonderful wines every year will know, we always say that while the Mas Martinet output is known for being characterful, impressive and incredibly pensive in youth, their real class, derived from true old-vine complexity, dark licorella schist and wild, spicy minerality requires at a decade to emerge. With perfect provenance assured, this is the perfect opportunity to experience a bit of Mediterranean magic first-hand.

Magnums of the delicious, sweetly fruited Martinet Bru 2006 start at just £50 IB, a bargain if ever there were one, before a brace of 2009s – one of the top vintages in the region. Els Escurcons is the highest vineyard in Priorat and produces a windswept, rocky, precipitous Garnacha that combines freshness with power. Cami Pesseroles is Cariñena like you’ve never seen it before. We don't know of a more elegant yet honest incarnation of this variety, anywhere in the world. From centenarian vines, blended with some smoothing Garnacha, it is a true Priorat icon. Finally, we have a few cases of Clos Martinet 2004 available - one of the best wines the estate has ever produced, in our view. The whole package. This is where tradition meets modernity – silky dark fruit with noble maturity and stunning minerality. At seventeen years old it is sitting pretty in its drinking window and will stand shoulder to shoulder with any of the Spanish greats.    Read More
