Montlandrie with Maranello flair
28 August 2020

Denis Durantou of Chateau L’Eglise Clinet fame was one of the first big names to see the potential in Castillon. He purchased this 11 hectare site high up on the limestone and clay plateau above the Cote de Castillon in 2009. With his customary enthusiasm and dynamism, he replanted much of the vineyard with Merlot, Cabernet Franc and 412 “Testarossa” Cabernet Sauvignon clones. Early examples were utterly delicious, but it wasn’t until the 2014 vintage when Denis’ plantings started making their way into the final blend that we saw the true potential of this vineyard.

A recent tasting of the 2014 Montlandrie was proof, if it were needed that Montlandrie is the real deal, the finished article. This is a refined, genteel claret with noble aromas of warm autumn fruit, crème de cassis and a lovely florality imparted buy those Ferrari clones*. The palate is broad and beautifully textured; decadent soft fruits are interspersed with earthy, mineral notes – one gets a real sense of terroir. Although plump and generous, there’s a good line of acidity that gives this energy and direction. At less than £16 on your table, this classy Castillon ticks all the boxes!
