Today marks the release of Opus One 2018. It is not news to say that this leading estate has been celebrated over decades for releasing wines of uncompromising quality and balance. They have all the heart and soul of the sunny Napa Valley, with an exuberance that is tempered (not clipped) by a philosophy that embraces the great Cabernets of Bordeaux’s left bank. Never has this been more apparent than in 2018. Opus 2018, while a wine of true Napa pedigree, has a structural framework that speaks to energy, purity and delicacy. Time in the glass reveals notes of blackcurrant, coffee-bean and chocolate, all underpinned by cool, violet-accented plum and blackberry fruits and a chiselled, linear finish of first growth quality. The gorgeous combination of ripeness and detail is beautifully played out here and, suffice to say, we were absolutely smitten by the results. Produced from 84% Cabernet Sauvignon, 6% Petit Verdot, 5% Merlot, 4% Cabernet Franc and 1% Malbec, the 2018 was aged for 17 months in new French oak.

The vineyards enjoyed idyllic growing conditions with consistent weather and milder temperatures in 2018. The beginning of the year was notably dry; however, well-timed rainfall just before budbreak provided the necessary water for canopy development. Flawless conditions ensued during flowering and fruit set which led to higher-than-average yields. While the season got off to a later start, veraison occurred only seven days later than the average which gave the fruit the necessary time to ripen perfectly. Harvest began on September 19th with a steady pace that continued until the last fruit arrived on October 25th.
