New Producer: Introducing the crystalline wines of 4 Monos in Gredos
When it comes to wine, it feels like Spain is entering a new dawn. We have always been selective when it comes to our Spanish portfolio, focusing on small producers with big aspirations. Over the past few years though, we have seen a shift when it comes to premium Spanish wine, and a whole new generation of small producers take the reins in previously unsung regions. Perhaps the most exciting of these is Gredos: the mountain range located about an hour west of Madrid on the administrative borders between Madrid, Castilla y Leon and Castilla La Mancha. Incredible, old bush-vine Garnacha is the name of the game here and vineyard altitude climbs as high as 1200m, ensuring huge day-night temperature swings – perfect for the later ripening Garnacha grape. Nestled in and amongst the rocks is a small cohort of dynamic producers working to capture the region’s inherent potential by restoring centurion vineyards and turning out jewel-like red wines with a tremoring, ethereal character all of their own.

One such producer is 4 Monos and Justerini & Brooks is delighted to be launching their wines in the UK. 4 Monos, meaning “4 Monkeys”, is the brainchild of four friends who met whilst hiking in the Gredos mountains. Husband and wife Javier Garcia and Laura Robles take care of viticulture and winemaking, and production is tiny. In the cellar they are hands-off and traditional, favouring whole bunch fermentation and long, gentle extractions. Aging is carried out in neutral casks for 12-18 months depending on the wine. If you are yet to discover the magic of Gredos these wines offer terroir-transparency, complexity and delicacy, all at extremely reasonable prices.
