New Producer: Swartland's David & Nadia

New Producer: Swartland's David & Nadia
Today we are delighted to introduce the latest addition to the Justerini & Brooks portfolio. David & Nadia Sadie are a young husband and wife team who, since going full-time in 2013, have become two of the best winemakers in the Swartland and one of South Africa’s hottest tickets. We fell in love with the 2016 releases and believe that this exciting young winery will play a major role in shaping South Africa’s ongoing wine revolution in the years to come.

Ambition comes with talent, and the winery’s long-term plan to nurture and restore the best parcels of bush vines from all over the Swartland is an arduous effort to uphold local traditions and breathe new life into the region’s enviable stock of old vines. Wherever possible, irrigation is eschewed in a bid to properly reflect the vintage and Swartland’s array of complex soils, all made possible thanks to the revitalisation of the most promising, often neglected vineyards, combined with a rigorous selection process at harvest. Once in the winery, the grapes see a cool soak before spontaneous fermentation in a combination of open concrete tanks and neutral 300L French oak barrels. Pumping over is limited to once a day and whole-bunch pressing is carried out on all of the whites and up to 50% for the reds in a bid to retain freshness and perfume. The wines then rest in large oak casks for a period of 12-18 months. Produced with a gentle hand from start to finish, the wines are marked by a natural finesse and silken restraint, with bright acidities and sumptuous, soulful fruit.

White plantings include Chenin Blanc, Roussanne, Clairette, Viognier and Semillon, all of which come together to form the white blend “Aristargos”, while the red blend “Elpidios” is comprised of Carignan, Grenache, Cinsault and Syrah. Atop the David & Nadia range are the two flagship grapes: Chenin Blanc and Grenache, bottled up as single varietals. The Chenin comes from the oldest vines and is fermented and aged in neutral French barrels, arriving at a deft 12.5% alcohol and a total production of just 5,000 bottles. The Grenache is supremely elegant and lifted, hailing from three vineyards with two distinctly different soil types: one that is deep and rich in iron and two from high elevation sites with a marked granitic influence, lending it a mineral, saline edge. Production rarely exceeds 3,000 bottles.
