New release: Chateau Beaucastel 2016
The Perrins describe the 2016 vintage as “Exceptional.” It was a year that was blessed with an “idyllic” season, a dry summer punctured by just enough rain in the middle of September to allow the vines to finish ripening. A good thing too as nature was generous with both quality and quantity, so bunches were afforded time to attain full maturity and complete their natural cycle. Healthy ripe berries with good levels of acidity and potential sugars of 14% to 14.5% - restrained by Chateauneuf standards - have been translated into seamless wines of such ease and fluidity. They don’t for a minute feel like the product of a dry, stressed season. These are sensual, fine wines of pure sun-kissed charm and brightly glowing fruit. Comparisons are being drawn with 2010, but whilst the wines are potentially greater, stylistically they are poles apart from this turbo charged vintage that was high in alcohol and acidity. No, 2016s offer a great deal more charm that belies their concentration. They seduce rather like the 2000s did but with a twist more freshness. The Perrins feel that the more the wines evolve the more they remind them of their wonderful 1990s. Praise indeed and well deserved too, for this is one of the most seductive young vintages we can ever remember tasting and, dare we say it, even surpasses its excellent predecessor, 2015.
