New Release: Krug Edition 164

New Release: Krug Edition 164
We are delighted today to release Krug’s latest release of Grande Cuvée – the highly anticipated Edition 164, base vintage 2008.

Much is made of Krug’s enviable reserve wines – after all, this is the prestige Champagne that likes to be called a Multi-Vintage not a Non-Vintage. However, to focus solely on the multitude of reserve wines that go into each bottle of Grande Cuvée would be to miss the fact that the approximately 60% of any given bottle is composed of a single base vintage. And when that vintage is the much lauded 2008, it’s time to sit up and take notice!

Marking only the second official Krug Edition release, Edition 164 is a monumental Grande Cuvée. The cool 2008 vintage has imbued this with the steeliest of cores. There is incredible precision, cut and definition to the flavours and an intensity and sense of drive and tension that is going to take some years to fully unwind. Add to this 127 different reserve wines spanning 11 vintages, the earliest dating back as far as 1990, and this truly is a wine to collect and savour in years to come.

When the mind-blowing Krug 2002 was tasted next to Grande Cuvée base vintage 2002, the similarities between the bottles, while logically not surprising, were still astounding. We fully expect this to be the case with Edition 164 when tasted alongside the as yet un-released Krug 2008.

“Krug's NV Grand Cuvée 164 Edition is a total knockout. Based on the 2008 vintage, the 164th Edition shows all the crystalline tension and energy that is such a signature of the year. At times, the 164 reminds me of the 2008 vins clairs I tasted after harvest. The flavors are brisk, delineated and pulsing with energy, while the more oxidative notes that are such a signature of Krug Champagnes are not especially evident. A wine of total pedigree and class, the 164 reminds me of some of the great Grand Cuvées of the 1960s and 1970s I have been lucky to taste over the years. No Champagne lover will want to be without this spectacular, captivating wine. All that said, readers should be patient, as the 164 is painfully young, austere and in need of serious cellaring.” 97/100 Antonio Galloni, Vinous.com
