New Release – Othello 2015

New Release – Othello 2015
Othello is a misleading choice of name. One might expect this story to end badly… However, this is a Moueix production, the family behind La Fleur Petrus, Trotanoy, Hosanna and of course, Dominus. This third label, far from being consumed with envy at the scores lavished on big brothers, Dominus (100 WA) and Napanook (93+ WA), is rather more self-assured than its namesake. It doesn’t really have any pretentions to grandeur – Edouard always maintained that this project was intended to produce an early drinking, enjoyable expression from this great estate, which could be enjoyed before, and at considerably less expense than the flagship Dominus or Napanook.

We tasted the 2015 Othello in April and we were utterly seduced. This is the fourth commercial release, and to our minds, it is the most accomplished. It is instantly gratifying. Copious amounts of opulent, ripe Californian Cabernet lavish the palate – this is sumptuous and quite hedonistic, yet there is a balance and cohesion that is very impressive. Far from being just a third tier selection, Othello really offers a unique and rather interesting proposition – Moueix wine-making from one of the best terroirs in Napa at a very affordable price, and it’s really rather Moorish!

“Sweet cassis, plum and spicy dried fruits, full bodied with ripe tannins and soft brioche, nutmeg and rose water coming through on the long finish. A more powerful Othello than the 2014 with a silky-hedonistic feel that proves very alluring, even at this early juncture”.
