New Release Penfolds Grange

It is true that few releases are as carefully managed as the annual Penfolds collection, but then few carry the same levels of expectation. Each year the range is met with rapturous enthusiasm from Penfolds’ legion of devotees, and even the most ardent European collectors, seeing Penfolds as worthy of exception, tend to join them. Indeed, it is not uncommon to see Grange verticals in wine cellars otherwise stacked with old world classics. Perhaps it is Peter Gago’s unerring commitment to the brand, seeing him travel the globe extolling the virtues of Australia’s most famous wine, or the simple fact that Penfolds’ multi-regional blending and meticulous selection process appears to deliver every single year. With over sixty vintages under their belt, the pedigree of the great Penfolds Grange is absolutely without question.

This year it is the turn of 2013 to shine. A fantastically rich, classic Grange, the 2013 is the result of a warm, dry growing season and relatively early harvest. Yields were lower than average and the finished wine is a deep, concentrated beauty of pristine fruit, structure and intensity. 96% Shiraz and 4% Cabernet Sauvignon from the best vines of the Barossa, McLaren Vale, Coonawarra and their very own Magill Estate on the outskirts of Adelaide, the 2013 exudes glossy liquorice, brooding fruit, sweet spices, figs, balsamic and soy, with ripe, muscular tannins. Put it this way; if 2012 was a soul singer, 2013 is a rock star!
