New Release: Sassicaia 2015

We are delighted today to offer the brilliant new releases from Tenuta San Guido, including the knockout Sassicaia 2015. Both 2015 and 2016 in Tuscany were blessed with warm and generous growing seasons and near-perfect harvest conditions. They will be broadly characterised by liberal fruit, suave structures and excellent ageing potential. In the case of 2015, after a cool and rainy winter and early spring, perfect for building up water reserves, flowering was even and relatively abundant, occurring at the end of May. Sunshine and soaring summer temperatures followed throughout June and July, worrying producers before August brought with it cooler temperatures and timely rains, gifting the vines welcome refreshment and paving the way for a steady run up to the Cabernet Franc harvest which began in mid-September. Comparisons have been made to the now legendary 1985 vintage. Priscilla Incisa Della Rocchetta of Tenuta San Guido declares with a smile that when it comes to 2015 “we can’t complain about anything!”. At this early stage, 2016 seems so far to have picked up the baton and run with it, yielding another excellent crop of both ripeness and freshness.

To Sassicaia itself, although a “classic” vintage in the Tuscan sense, the 2015 does not in any way lack for freshness, nor does it lean too far toward black, balsam fruits and opulent Cabernet as others might. It is naturally full bodied and powerful, but it is also a lifted, dancing wine and its sultry, stylish and glossy fruit turns to red plum, sage, sweet spices and fresh mint as much as it does to dark fruit. The intense, mouth-coating fruit is both seductive and energetic, lifted by bitter cherries and a bright herbal edge from fragrant Cabernet Franc, ensuring its finish is not overly dense or heavy. This is a complex, beautifully balanced Sassicaia that deserves time in the cellar. Frankly, 2015 has all of the ingredients to go down with the best of them. Produced from a blend of 85% Cabernet Sauvignon and 15% Cabernet Franc from first-rate vineyards on complex clay, gravel and limestone soils at elevations of up to 400m above sea-level, the 2015 is an unmissable Sassicaia with a confident strut, cementing its place as one of the great wines of the world.
