One of Azelia’s top scorers
If the whirl of Bordeaux 2018s released over the last few weeks leaves you hankering after something completely different that is ready to be drunk now, then this could be for you. Today we are offering one of the highest ever scoring Barolos made by the highly-respected Azelia estate: the 2011 from top single cru Margheria. After the clamour for 2010, the warmer 2011 Barolos were somewhat overlooked. We found this “warmth” translated into generosity and smoothness in the young, albeit powerful Barolos when first released. Re-visiting 2011s more recently, we can vouch for how tempered, alluring and delectable they are today.

At the time of release Galloni honoured this wine with a 96 point rating, second only to their magical 2010 Bricco Fiasco. Margheria is perennially one of our favourites, too, and today 2011 every bit lives up to our fastidious expectations. It hails from a prime south and south west facing 55 year old plot in the Serralunga d'Alba commune planted on white clay and limestone soils. Aged in the traditional way; for 28 months in large slavonian oak botti, this is Azelia’s most classical and mineral Barolo with warming but saline dark fruit. The structure is svelte, the fruit dense but the chalky tannins and mouth-watering minerals leave your palate clean and refreshed. At once sumptuous and energising, this is Serralunga Barolo at its charming, classical best.
Iron, smoke, spices, rose petal, lavender and mint meld into a core of dark red fruit in the 2011 Barolo Margheria. Here, too, the style is all about finesse, nuance and complexity. Firm tannins convey an overall impression of classicism. The Margheria is the most classic of the wines in the Scavino range. Three years in cask, with natural malos the spring after the harvest are among the choices that give the Margheria its unique personality. This is a terrific showing from the Margheria, a wine that has blossomed considerably since I last tasted it. Antonio Gallonio, Vinous, 96 Points.
