One of Meursault’s great secrets
24 June 2020

Burgundy is a complex region, full of secrets. For us this is as much of its allure as the legendary wines from famous vineyards. Today’s offering is one of our top white Burgundy insider tips. Chateau de Meursault’s Clos des Grands Charrons which, being a small villages-level 0.85ha monopole, is rarely seen and little-known. The Chateau, however, quite rightly consider this one of their flagship wines. Sitting mid to top slope just above the Premier Cru line facing east/south-east, here the roots of this well-situated vineyard struggle through the unforgiving Jurassic limestone soils. Well-drained but with enough clay to nourish the vines and endow the resulting wines with that all important “Meursault” texture, Clos des Grands Charrons yields wines of mineral dynamism built on solid foundations.

The 2016 offers the full, buttery body of classic Meursault with the minerality of Perrières. A very complete and accomplished wine. A wave of ripe, unctuous flavours of honeyed stone fruit wash through the palate before giving way to an undertow of more sapid characteristics of mineral, herb and salt. Fleshy and full but encircled by a refreshing halo of acidity, this is not just ample and deeply satisfying but also incredibly moreish.
