Opus One 2014
04 September 2017

Today marks the first release of Opus One 2014 – a beautiful and highly classical vintage for one of the Napa Valley’s most iconic wines. Coming hot on the heels of the much lauded 2013 vintage, the 2014 is perhaps even more to our liking. There’s less density, richness and explosive power to the 2014, and as a result the tannic profile is more prominent - but also more refined; structurally the 2014 appears to be finer, sweeter and suppler than almost any vintage we can remember tasting. The fruit is extremely precise and focussed, with complex sweet earth and gravel notes alongside fine dark berry fruit, cocoa nib and tobacco. The result is a marvellous Opus One that has more than a hint of old world grandeur about it. Two thumbs up from us.

Started in 1978 by Baronne Philippe de Rothschild and Robert Mondavi, the operation has come a long way since the early days when all fruit was brought in from the To Kalon vineyard. Today fruit is selected from four parcels of prime estate owned vineyards in Oakland, each planted with traditional Bordeaux varieties, before being transported to one of Napa’s most recognisable and distinctive wineries. Wine-making follows traditional methods with an average of 18 days skin contact before 18 months ageing in new French Oak. The final blend is 80% Cabernet Sauvignon, 7% Petit Verdot, 6% Cabernet Franc, , 5% Merlot and 2% Malbec.
