Oregon’s dynamic duo….

Oregon’s dynamic duo….
We are delighted to present Ken & Erica Pahlow’s spring release collection of single vineyard Walter Scott 2017s. This is a vintage beloved by many of Oregon’s winemakers, certainly the sort who make the wines we like to drink. It marks the return to a more classically styled Willamette Valley growing season, ending with a September that was marked by cool days and cold nights. At Walter Scott the ensuing 2017s represent much that is great about Oregon Pinot Noir and Chardonnay, with lithe structures and bright profiles that offer a magical window into the diversity of Willamette Valley’s varied vineyard sites.

For a more immediate introduction to top chardonnay cuvees, the reserve blend Cuvee Anne is produced from five top vineyards and is all about the tension and purity for which this range is admired. In the single vineyard series the Chardonnays are full of energy and detail, the Pinots graceful, rocky and pure. Across both varieties you find profiles littered with wonderful stones and salt and structures that lean towards finesse and elegance. It is no wonder almost any mention of the top wines of Oregon today includes the name Walter Scott.

Ken’s winemaking can best be described as light touch yet high detail; judicious whole cluster fermentation for the reds, no battonage for the whites, gentle extractions, wild fermentations, ageing in an increasing proportion of demi-muids, low-to-no sulphur during fermentation. It is a regime informed by his time working with Dominique Lafon at Lingua Franca, and repeated trips to Burgundy, employing the techniques of those whose wines he most admires. All of which adds up to a highly transparent and sophisticated set of wines that more than ably show off the great sites this project has access to; whether it’s the complexity of X-Novo’s clonal field blend or Sojourner’s sweet grace and elegance, the voices of these wines are clear and strong. We are delighted to be able to offer the five wines below from the 2019 Spring release.
