Lying on the west-side of the D2, Pichon Longueville is one of the most iconic and best performing châteaux in the Medoc. We admit that we favour the other Pichon when tasting en primeur, but after élevage it consistently outperforms its peers, often topping the tables at Southwold. As well as their impeccable Grand Vin, they produce one of the best second wines on the market, Tourelles de Longueville.

Christian Seely and his team understand what most people want from a second wine: something that is representative of the Grand Vin and approachable almost immediately. That’s possibly why this has become such a successful brand for discerning drinkers as well as the restaurant scene. The 2014 vintage is at its best in the northern Medoc, and Pichon Longueville has clearly made the most of the conditions. Exceptional quality Merlot from the Sainte Anne vineyard provides the base of the blend (65%) and imparts depth and texture. There’s an abundance of concentrated, ripe berry fruit, interspersed with clove, graphite and a lovely Pauillac, floral quality. The mid-palate is refined and elegant as ever, displaying the tell-tale purity and focus of the 2014s, supported by well-mannered tannins. This is yet another very accomplished effort, which slips down all too easily… It is in a beautiful place for drinking right now but will continue to evolve and charm for many years to come.
