Magnificent Margheria

Magnificent Margheria
“Azelia remains one of the under-the-radar jewels of Piemonte. The wines have been terrific for some time, and prices are exceedingly fair considering the quality of what goes into the bottle.” - Antonio Galloni

The Azelia estate, now five generations old, remains one of the undiscovered stars of Piedmont. Currently under the stewardship of Luigi Scavino (cousin to Enrico Scavino) and his son Lorenzo, they produce such consistently brilliant wines it is a wonder they are not more widely known. Those that have drunk their Reserva Voghera Brea will know just how arresting these carefully produced wines can be. And a recently enjoyed bottle of Bricco Fiasco 2007 was the perfect combination of power, personality and perfume. In addition to these two vineyards they also own holdings in Serralunga’s San Rocco and Margheria vineyards.

Interestingly, grapes from Margheria makes up a large percentage of Gaja’s Sperss, a wine that commands a considerably more hefty price tag. It is an entirely south facing vineyard, situated in the centre of the commune of Serralunga, which produces textbook Barolo of power, nuance and sweet, floral fruit. The average production of this cru is about the same as Le Pin (500 cases), so it is rarefied stuff indeed. Most vintages are about £400 per dozen, approximately £1000 less than Sperss; which makes this a serious bargain. We are delighted to offer an allocation (albeit miniscule) of the 2005, 2006, 2008 and 2009 vintages from this wonderful vineyard.

2009 Barolo, Margheria @ £415.00 per case ib
‘The 2009 Barolo Margheria has a bit more richness and body than the Bricco Fiasco, but it too, is a relatively mid-weight offering. Dark red cherries, plums, crushed flowers, anise, mint and cinnamon are some of the notes that emerge over time. Clean veins of minerality appear on the finish, adding lift and vibrancy. This is a relatively delicate style for Serralunga. The Margheria was aged entirely in cask. 90/100’ - Antonio Galloni

2008 Barolo, Margheria @ £380.00 per case ib
‘The 2008 Barolo Margheria opens with a sweet, inviting bouquet redolent of hard candy, flowers, mint and licorice. Deceptively medium in body, the Margheria packs quite a bit of punch, even if that isn’t totally obvious at the outset. Layers of dark fruit flow through to a powerful, incisive finish laced with dried flowers and spices. The Margheria is notable for its intensity and textural depth. It is another super-classy wine from Azelia. For the Margheria the estate did not encourage fast malos by heating the cellar after the alcoholic fermentation. Instead, the malos were allowed to occur naturally the following spring, a much more traditional approach that worked beautifully. 94/100.’ - Antonio Galloni

2006 Barolo, Margheria @ £380.00 per case ib
‘The 2006 Barolo Margheria is totally Serralunga in its dark, vibrant fruit, violets, tar, iron, smoke and licorice. Endowed with tons of length and energy, the Margheria reveals notable complexity and a wiry, taut expression of fruit. Although impressive for its sheer power, my only wish is that the Margheria had a touch more depth to match its formidable structure. The wine’s balance, though, is terrific. 93/100’. - Antonio Galloni

2005 Barolo, Margheria @ £395.00 per case ib
‘The 2005 Barolo Margheria is a dense, hulking wine bursting with dark fruit, French oak, smoke, licorice and tar. This textured, weighty Barolo finishes with substantial heft and richness. Today the wine remains quite primary but a few years in bottle should allow for additional complexity to emerge. 91/100’. - Antonio Galloni
