For a pleasure-soaked, tensile white wine, priced akin to a village level Burgundy, look no further than Ossian 2015. Five years of aging has brought about the slow harmonisation of crystalline, trembling ripe citrus fruit, salted almonds, white peach and dry herbs to produce a stunning pure Verdejo from Nieva in central Spain. Gently pressed, wild yeast fermented and aged in 30% new oak for 12 months in a combination of 228 and 600L barrels, everything about Ossian speaks to top quality, Burgundy-inspired winemaking. What’s more, the Ossian vineyards are blessed with a seam of sandy soils that protects the vines from the dreaded Phylloxera louse, enabling an enormous amount of old vine material to build up and survive for over a hundred years. In fact, the 2015 is blended from 120-140 year old pre-phylloxera vineyards, and it struts along with a sense of inner-volume and concentration that marries silken, generous fruit, a nervous acid line, and a long, savoury, spicy, mineral-drenched finish.
