A Ravishing Pol

A Ravishing Pol
The Pol Roger 2004 was the result of a cool summer and fine late season weather. After the house's unique process of a second cold settling of the must and initial fermentation, the wine was laid to rest in the house's 33 metre deep cellars where it underwent its second fermentation in bottle before eventually being hand-riddled, such a rarity in Champagne these days. The 2004 represents the traditional vintage Pol blend of 60% Pinot Noir and 40% Chardonnay from 20 Grands and Premiers crus vineyards in the Montagne de Reims and the Côte des Blancs. Produced only in limited quantities the Brut Vintage 2004 has been aged for 8 years in Pol Rogers cellars before disgorgement.

Surprisingly open and inviting already the 2004 is ravishing now and shows impeccable balance, mixing ripe fruit and toasty richness with a fine acidity. This may not be a Pol to put away for decades but there is no doubting the enormous pleasure it is capable of giving now and over the next 5 years. A notch above the 1999 and 2000, more or less on a par with 1998, this is a Pol worth buying.
