Our latest, and one of the last remaining, releases of the 2012 Burgundy vintage is that of Domaine de la Pousse d'Or. The estate won great repute under the stewardship of Gerard Potel but since its sale in 1997 retreated into the shadows whilst the new owner, engineer Patrick Landanger, set about finding his feet in the daunting new world of Burgundy wine-growing.
Patrick made not only huge financial investment, as seen in his self-designed cellar, but, above all, he invested time in setting out to understand the fabulous vineyards at his disposal. This had started to pay off by the 2009 vintage, when we noticed a marked jump up in quality, and we have been even more impressed with each subsequent vintage. The Domaine has now firmly re-emerged and is without doubt one to follow.
The estate has Volnay at its heart, the cellars are surrounded by swathes of prime vineyards such as Bousse d'Or and Caillerets. Subsequently these holdings were supplemented by the purchase of Domaine Moine-Hudelot in the Cote de Nuits, which brought with it some enviable parcels including Bonnes Mares and Amoureuses. From Chambolle to Volnay, from Villages to Grand Cru this Domaine is capable of producing excellent quality across the board.
Two particularly good value highlights in Allen Meadow's 2012 Cote de Beaune Red Burgundy review are :
2012, Chambolle-Musigny "Les Feusselottes": (from a .42 ha parcel). This offers a noticeable step up in aromatic elegance with its ultra-fresh, cool and restrained nose that is comprised of essence of red and blue pinot fruit, spice and stone nuances. There is excellent tension and beautiful delineation to the racy and silky medium-bodied flavors that also exude a fine bead of minerality on the delicious finish that tightens up quickly. This is a really beautiful and harmonious effort, indeed the word Zen comes to mind. 92/2020+
2012 Chambolle-Musigny: (from parcels totaling 1.41 ha). Mild reduction comprises the purity of the nose and I would advise decanting this if you're going to try a bottle young. The silky-textured and intensely mineral-driven middle weight flavors are utterly delicious before terminating in an impeccably well-balanced and refined finish. This is textbook Chambolle and recommended. 89/2018+
