Enjoying good red Burgundy need not be too complicated or expensive. Some of the world’s great bottles hail from Burgundy’s golden slopes; magical bottles that require thought, time, attention and a visit to the bank manager. Yet Burgundy these days can also offer instant, uncomplicated pleasure; a wine where you can just be in the moment and savour, without planning your whole evening – or monthly budget - around it. Our current favourite for drinking now is Château de Marsannay’s 2017 Marsannay.
A part whole bunch-fermented Marsannay from award-winning winemaker Sylvain Pabion – an exquisitely pretty wine. Not particularly complex, but that is not the point of this wine, it’s all about pure, unadulterated pleasure. Gregarious and smooth this offers an open, generous array of fruit flavours of damsons and cherries with a floral violet perfume. Soft, fruit and velvety. It is pure joy.

About Chateau de Marsanay
Since 2012 Château de Marsannay has been owned by the Halley family, at the same time they bought the Château de Meursault. They own 34 hectares of superbly situated vines, and as with Château de Meursault, have invested heavily in realising the estate’s huge potential. The Domaine is managed by Château de Meursault’s Stéphane Follin-Arbelet, who is overseeing a quality revolution, but Château de Marsannay have their own winemaking team, lead by the fantastic, and award-winning, Sylvain Pabion. Winemaking is classic and adaptive, largely de-stalked but with whole bunches when necessary, a cold-soaked prior to fermentation and then ageing in a mixture of new and used oak barriques for over a year. Alongside Château de Meursault, this is on course to become one of the largest organic certified estates in the Côte d'Or.
