Reviving Rhône for Christmas….
04 December 2020

The qualities of Rhône valley wines are hugely underappreciated, in our opinion. Artisan wines of soul and character simply don’t come any cheaper. One bottle perfect for Christmas drinking is the St Joseph 2017 red from one of the masters of the Northern Rhône, André Perret. If you want flavour, balance and versatility in your wine without breaking the bank, then look no further. André’s St Joseph comes from the northern part of the appellation, around the village of Chavanay, where granite soils and a cooler climate yields crisper, lighter wines than those further south near Tournon and Hermitage. He has crafted a 2017 that offers a supreme balance of the ripe, supple generosity typical of the vintage, and the mouth-watering tang that are the hallmarks of his Syrahs. Red and dark berry fruit mix with cracked pepper spice, salt and coal dust notes to give a medium to full-bodied, smooth wine of vibrancy, generosity and elegance. This gives glimpses of Côte Rôtie at a fraction of the price. Flavoursome and robust enough to enjoy with a Roast, yet sufficiently supple and fresh to drink on its own or with cold cuts – a truly diverse and enjoyable Rhône tailor-made for Christmas.
