Plaudits for Kuhling-Gillot and Battenfeld-Spanier have been arriving thick and fast in recent years. Vinum Winery of the year and Eichelman Wine Estate of the year in 2018, 1st and 2nd placed dry German Rieslings in Gault Millau 2020, Five Grapes for Battenfeld Spanier, it’s been a fairly relentless stream of critical adoration, all of it well-deserved. Their most recent success sees them with the top scoring Rheinhessen wines in Stephan Reinhardt’s latest Wine Advocate report.

This is a passionately run pair of estates, brought together by marriage, both vinified by Oliver Spanier in the same cellar. The two estates offer up contrasting sides of Rheinhessen terroir; the steep red slate soils of the Roter Hang for Kuhling-Gillot and the rolling limestone hills around Molsheim and Florsheim-Dalsheim for the Battenfeld-Spanier wines.
