Sassicaia 2014
06 February 2017

There can be so much to celebrate about vintages such as 2014, under two conditions. The first of these is well-located vineyards. The magic of the greatest grand Cru Burgundy is at its most mesmerising in more challenging vintages, when gloomy weather allows the vineyard to do the talking rather than the sun or the heat. And so it is anywhere in the world that boasts special terroir. Well-located vineyards show their brilliance in more challenging vintages. The second condition is to have a complete understanding of, and confidence in, the qualities of your land. As seasons go, 2014 certainly provided challenges. It was at times very wet, generally cool and correspondingly late (harvest did not finish at Tenuta San Guido until October). Yet is clearly a year where quality has won out, the Tenuta San Guido team meeting both conditions, and in doing so creating a wine to be admired and enjoyed in equal measure. Knowledge, dedication, no ‘make-up’, and the natural beauty shines through. It must be said, too, that although 2014 was not all plain-sailing it was certainly a less complicated season than 2002. Crucially the end of season weather was benign enough to afford the winemaking team patience and it paid off. A long-ripening season made for sweet, soft tannins in the berries. This is evident in the 2014 Sassicaia which displays great charm and poise with its bright, delicate fruit. It may not be the most concentrated vintage ever but it does not lack substance either. What’s more the balance is so finely-weighted you can well imagine this vintage surprising many after several years’ bottle age.    Read More
