September Roundup

30 September 2024

The Beyond Bordeaux Campaign is drawing to a close. While there have been more than a few strays released, there have also been wines with great pedigree, worthy of a blue ribbon.

We loved Opus 2021. This wine commands respect and is a worthy companion to the finest wines Bordeaux has to offer. Supplies are low of this US first growth, so act fast if you want to add some to your cellar. We can also access a small number of large formats of the incredible 2019 vintage, for those looking to backfill. Speaking of Bordeaux’s finest wines, Chateau Latour 2009 is a remarkable achievement, and one of the greatest Medoc wines we’ve ever tasted. Arguably the finest Latour since 1982, this is not just another release; this is likely to be the last chance to get your hands on the perfect provenanced, multi critic 100-point wine. This is a rarefied, verified unicorn wine in our midst.

It was a very strong year for Tuscany, with Masseto and Solaia releasing their landmark 2021s. Fortunately, there are still a small number of bottles of Solaia available in Bordeaux. This 100-point wine should be snaffled up quickly given the estate’s calibre and the wine’s evident quality. Moreover, if you missed out on Masseto, you can rest easy, as the eminently drinkable Massetino 2022 is still available. It oozes charisma and charm and was without question one of our favourite wines at the launch tasting for the campaign.

Another of our top picks was Favia’s 2021 Cerro Sur; a Cabernet Franc dominated blend from high above Coombsville. Made by Andy Erickson and Anne Favia - a husband-and-wife team who have worked at some of the biggest names in the valley - it’s a wine of stunning nuance and grace that speaks to so much of what we love about the Napa valley. If you haven’t tried their wines yet, you are missing out.

Our favourite South American was undoubtedly Cheval des Andes. The team at Cheval Blanc have fine tuned this offering in recent years and the new vintage displayed a similar deftness of touch as their St. Emilion Grand Vin. With a meaningful price reduction, this is worthy of consideration.

Battenfeld Spanier’s glorious dry Riesling Liquid Earth 2019 is the wine’s strongest showing yet. An offering of incredible fortitude and energy, brimming with minerality and unbelievable class, this is a release that true German Riesling fans should not miss out on. And it’s a similar story for fans of Spain with Telmo Rodriguez projects: Yjar, Dolio, Matallana and De la Riva. This is a diverse range, showcasing the best these four vastly different regions have to offer.
