Shimmering Sangiovese

There is no doubting that Mother Nature has been smiling on Chianti Classico these last few years, and with a growing crop of talented winemakers lifting the region out of ignominy – now is the time to start snapping up the produce of the region’s major protagonists. Monteraponi is one of the estates spear-heading this resurgence. Their traditional, hard-working artisanal approach and prime location vineyards make for some of the region’s most mineral, intense and soulful wines. Quite simply these are not to be missed; they are among the most exciting wines in Tuscany today. At a total of just 12 hectares, planted primarily to Sangiovese, Canaiolo and Colorino, Monteraponi is located in the higher reaches of Radda in Chianti, by all accounts a leading subzone in the Chianti Classico appellation. The soils are poor here, intensely rocky, while prevailing cooling breezes and almost 500m of elevation at the top of the estate, means intensely perfumed reds with a spine of trembling, invigorating acidity. Squarely in favour of a traditional approach in the cellar, the Monteraponi wines are fermented in concrete with long skin macerations, and aged in large neutral casks for between sixteen and thirty-six months depending on the cuvee.    Read More
