Some of the finest wines in the world are being produced in Piedmont these days, the very best boasting that same weightless intensity found in the most prestigious corners of the Côte d’Or. Today we are offering a fine example that is “shockingly easy to enjoy” - a Barbaresco from the single Cru Paje, made by one of Piedmont’s greatest, and most individual, artisans - Luca Roagna.
2014 was a challenging vintage but resulted in some highly lauded wines, most of all in Barbaresco. We found Luca’s Paje to be stunningly elegant. Beautiful and driven, this floats seamlessly across the palate. There is such persistence and elegant intensity to the flavours; a core of small, crisp red alpine berry notes that culminate in a haunting, cleansing, mineral finish. A brilliant wine, alarmingly easy to drink but with the structure to age, befitting of the impressive limestone-based, south west facing amphitheatre that is the Paje vineyard.

We weren’t surprised that the wine was among Antonio Galloni’s top 2014 Barbaresco picks:
“Cinnamon, cedar, sweet pipe tobacco and leather are some of the nuances that emerge from the 2014 Barbaresco Pajè. Pliant and open-knit, the 2014 is surprisingly open for a young Roagna Barbaresco, which makes it almost shockingly easy to enjoy even now (in relative terms), in what is the very early going by Roagna standards. Even, so there is plenty of Nebbiolo structure and tannin. Sweet rose petal, mint, tobacco, underbrush, game, and sweet red berry fruit add to the wine's stunning allure. 94+ “ www.vinous.com
