There’s probably a case to be made for great Loire Chenin Blanc being France’s most under-appreciated serious white wine. Top producers from Anjou to Montlouis are making wines that can compete on any stage, and at a fraction of the price of the likes of Burgundy or top white Bordeaux. Recent weeks have seen us pouring a string of bottles from Jacky Blot’s Domaine de la Taille aux Loups, whose excellent 2017s are just starting to hit their stride. Jacky purchased Clos Mosny back in 2012. In the intervening decade he has converted it to organic farming while fine tuning his selections from the 50 year old vines. This is what counts as a warm climat in Montlouis; a gently inclined, south facing walled vineyard on the plateau above the village, where the deep limestone soils are studded with flint.
