Speyside’s Hidden Gem

Speyside’s Hidden Gem
From one of Speyside’s better kept secrets comes a truly remarkable single malt whisky – the Benrinnes 21-year-old. Distilled in 1992, matured in ex-bodega sherry oak and bottled at cask strength (56.9%) in 2014, this rare and unusual bottling of Benrinnes has already achieved a cult-like following. With fewer than 3,000 bottles worldwide, it is not hard to understand why.

In its 182 year history Benrinnes has only ever released three whiskies under its own label. The 21-year-old 2014 Special Release is the most recent, and for awaiting customers it will be particularly welcome. Having spent all of its life in sherry casks, this Benrinnes has taken on the opulent sweetness of Jerez and balanced it with a delectable savoury spice, which culminates in a long, distinguished finish. It is a complex, thought-provoking glass of whisky.

How Benrinnes has remained Speyside’s hidden gem for quite this long is simply astonishing. However the wait for this bottling has certainly been worth it, and with no word on when the next official release from the distillery will be, true connoisseurs should stock up on this 21-year-old now. It could be a long wait otherwise.
