Take a walk on the wild side…
30 June 2021

Many will be familiar with the Canary Islands for its welcome combination of sun, sea and sand. A popular British tourist destination, you might be surprised to learn that Tenerife is also quietly growing in stature on the international wine scene. Thanks in large part to luminary estates Suertes del Marques and Envinate, a young generation of producers have, over the past decade, set about re-discovering and promoting a wine growing heritage that dates back centuries. Indeed, while we like to think we are apt in finding the next-best-thing, a certain William Shakespeare may have beaten us to it when, in Henry IV, the Mistress Quickly notes the remarkably healthy appearance of Doll Tearsheet, whose “pulsidge beats as extraordinarily as heart would desire, and color is as red as any rose, in good truth, la. But, i' faith, you have drunk too much canaries, and that’s a marvellous searching wine.” Naturally, we make no allusions today to any restorative capabilities, but Canary Island wines are definitely hugely individual, authentic wines that bring something totally unique to the table. Our favourite producer is Borja Perez; a hugely respected viticulturalist in the region, and rising star on the winemaking front too. Favouring a slightly wild, quite natural character, with notes of quinine, citrus skin, nuts, cloves and sea-spray in the case of the Listan Blanco, and hugely peppery, herbal, spicy reds, his wines speak entirely of the Tenerifan landscape, the rejection of international varieties, and the arduous work required to properly recoup a host of remote, intensely volcanic vineyards in a sensitive way. Perched out in the middle of the Atlantic, this is wine arguably at its most wild and unpredictable, with altitudes ranging from sea level to a dizzying 1400m.    Read More
