The Lauded Lukas Van Loggerenberg
10 February 2021

Broadly regarded as one of South Africa’s most exciting up-and-coming producers, Lukas Van Loggerenberg has been on our radar since his first solo vintage, 2016. After securing bits and pieces over the past few years, we are delighted to properly offer the 2019s, which although still seriously limited in volume, thoroughly deserve wider attention. To those who have not yet encountered his wines, Lukas has a distinctly old world style about him, producing crisp, early-picked wines both red and white that thrill for their energy and fruit purity from his base in the granite-rich Polkadraai Hills in Stellenbosch. A contemporary of all the leading New Wave producers, Lukas’ star has rapidly risen over the past few years and his entire production now sells out on release in South Africa. He owns no vineyards but has contracted fruit from some of the most prized heritage vineyards in Stellenbosch, Paarl and the Swartland, blending these to magical effect with a natural, hands-off approach in the cellar. New oak is eschewed entirely save for one barrel of Syrah, and a preference for whole bunch fermentations and relatively short ageing in cask means these wines retain their bright, youthful aromatics, but are all the while underpinned by a natural concentration and complexity that comes from a warm climate, low yields and old sites. In his words, “our small cellar and small volumes keeps us humble. We want to grow gradually and make sure that what goes in to the bottle is something we can be really proud of.”    Read More
